Destrier Predictions 2025: #3 Gartner will extend EMQs
Today’s prediction: Gartner will extend its new Emerging Market Quadrant (EMQ) reports.
Introduced mid-year, the EMQ is a new type of 2×2 quadrant from Gartner. At first, it sounded more revolutionary than it appeared. When the first EMQ appeared, we commented that it was more like a “classic” Magic Quadrant than expected.
Why? Because it’s still a 2×2 that stack-ranks vendors – and it also looks almost identical to an MQ. The only quadrant named differently from the MQ is the bottom left.
Vendors at the top right of the EMQ are tagged as (Emerging) Leaders. (Emerging) Challengers are at the top left, and (Emerging) Visionaries are at the bottom right. The EMQ’s bottom left is called Emerging Specialists, a label more flattering than the MQ’s Niche Players tag.
Today, EMQs cover four GenAI-related markets: we expect more in 2025. Consequently, more vendors will need to plan for the EMQ’s four-week update cycle, which is ambitious and punishing for vendors and analysts alike.
It also marks a significant shift to an always-on approach, moving away from the annual data grab. AR teams must understand and recognize the impact this will have on their workflow.
